At Newhills Primary school we ensure our children know about their rights and associated responsibilities from P1. We are currently working towards our UN Rights Respecting Schools Award and are expecting the judging panel very soon.
The children of Newhills have been finding out about how important rights are, both at home and in places where they are not taken for granted. Rights and responsibilities are a vital part of life at school, in the community, family, environment and globally.
Recently we have begun to adopt a Rights focus in almost every aspect of school development and focus. Where there is work being done, the children are keeping their eye on their rights, their responsibilities and the staff’s responsibilities.
Just as we try, wherever and whenever possible, to include a global aspect to our work, there is usually a rights dimension to be looked at too. You will see around the school, that the children are beginning to think about their topics and projects in a more ‘joined-up’ way.
